What can we learn from Rihanna's maternity looks?

Happy Saturday! In this week’s letter, Daysia talks about Pat Sajak’s reminder about the importance of empathy and the latest (dark) development with Kanye/Kim/Pete. Meanwhile, Hannah writes about the lesson that Rihanna teaches us with her maternity looks.

Happy reading,

This Week's Fixations

Daysia: Two pieces of news that stuck with me this week, one sweet and one very very dark:

The viral moment showing the Wheel of Fortune contestants continually guess “another feather in your cap” wrong was initially incredibly infuriating to watch. It just seemed too easy, right? But host Pat Sajak took to Twitter to defend the contestants for getting the phrase wrong, in an endearing and empathetic thread about the heightened pressure of being on a game show. The first guess—”another feather in your hat”—is an alternative saying for the correct answer, and once players realized that wasn’t the right answer, they were slightly taken aback. While it’s easy to sit at home, without the pressure of a camera or audience, to say the answer is simple, it’s quite different when you’re in the hot seat. Very sweet and grounding reminder!

On the complete opposite side of the spectrum, we have quite possibly one of the most disturbing and bleak developments to come out of the Kim Kardashian-Ye-Pete Davidson saga. We’ve already established that Ye’s social media posts and constant threats to “beat Pete Davidson’s ass” have been pure harassment. With his latest music video for the “Eazy,” the song in which he directly referenced beating Davidson’s ass, he animates a scenario in which he decapitates Davidson and uses his head as a rose planter. It’s incredibly dark and concerning, even with the added slide that says “JK he’s fine” at the end. It dropped the same day Kardashian was legally declared single by the courts—rightfully so, with what she has endured. As divorce proceedings continue, here’s hoping the situation doesn’t get worse and that he gets the help he needs.

Hannah: I can’t stop thinking about how Rihanna is redefining the “maternity look”—she continues to just wear whatever she wants and looks amazing. Lingerie, extravagant outwear, tops (in the loosest sense of the word, in the best way), and long necklaces have all been staples in her outfits throughout the years and that hasn’t changed. You can feel her confidence and happiness. And despite the fact that the attention on her has increased exponentially, she’s still calm, cool, and collected plus seems comfortable.

Rihanna, speaking to People about dressing while pregnant said, “You put some clothes on, and it's like, when you look good, you feel good. I've heard that for a very long time, but it's true. It really can get you up off that couch and make you feel like a bad bitch.”

Preach! An important lesson for all of us to remember.

Ugh, this look! So good!!

Also, this is the energy that I’m bringing the next time someone states the obvious to me:

Has Lorde Dropped a New Album?

Lorde won BEST SONG IN THE WORLD for “Solar Power” at the NME Awards. As she should!!!!!

ICYMI: Charli XCX dropped her latest single “Baby” from her upcoming album Crash.

Too Many Tabs

The Cut’s Bridget Read spoke to The O.C.’s Ben McKenzie, the anti-crypto hero we needed!

For Vox, writer Kiana Fitzgerald wrote about Ye, the language we use when talking about him, and destigmatizing bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses.

Writer Carrie Wittmer took a deep dive into all of the lies Robert Pattinson has told over the years for The Ringer.

Plus... stop asking Hilary Duff about the Lizzie McGuire reboot, Anna Marie Tendler is freezing her eggs, Joey King is engaged, and allegedly so is Sydney Sweeney (Daysia is crying and throwing up as we speak), two new Netflix projects for Lindsay Lohan, the very crowded competition to play Madonna, the Billboard Woman of the Year is Olivia Rodrigo!, a major error from the New York Times, and Kourt was always right.
