Is Jenny Slate underrated?
It’s Saturday and there have been two major developments this week. JLo and Ben Affleck are engaged (again!)—we love JLo in her vlogging era. And in the never-ending saga of Smith v. The Academy: he has banned Will Smith from attending the Oscars for 10 years (no comment from us but we’re exhausted). However, in this issue we don’t talk about either of those things but felt that they were important to mention.
Here’s what we’re actually talking about: Daysia bemoans some new music news and Hannah talks about her excitement for the Marcel The Shell with Shoes On movie and her love of Jenny Slate.
Happy reading,

This Week's Fixations
Daysia: I’ve been beside myself thinking about Little Mix’s last tour as a group (for now???) and how I’ll probably never see them live!!! If there is one thing to be excited about amid the impending hiatus, it is that Jade Thirlwall’s debut appears to be coming soon. She’s reportedly going mononymous, simply Jade. I smell a rising pop diva in our midst! I can only imagine what dance pop goodness Miss Jade will serve us, especially since she’s apparently been writing with Charli XCX.
In other music news that we didn’t get to last week, Sky Ferreira is allegedly coming… but WHEN? Who knows. It’s not a true indie sleaze comeback until that second album is OUT. She teased a new single, “Don’t Forget,” and indicated that we’d just have to wait a little longer, just until April. Unfortunately, I think I’ve seen this film before… and I didn’t like the ending.
Hannah: I feel like I have been missing an excitement for movies recently. There are a lot of things that I’m looking forward to in the coming months: Top Gun: Maverick at the end of May (finally!!) and then Thor: Love and Thunder in the summer. I’m also hoping to see The Daniels new film Everything Everywhere All at Once soon. I love that this movie is giving Michelle Yeoh her flowers that she so rightly deserves. If you’re still on the fence about the movie, read this thread by Barry Jenkins on the film for some reasons to see it.
But in terms of genuine, feel-good movies I feel like that’s been a gap in what’s coming out but this week I saw the trailer for Marcel The Shell with Shoes On… the movie! I’m not sure how to describe my love for Marcel—I think a lot of it stems from my absolute adoration of Jenny Slate.
I feel like she’s always a bit under the radar and she’s so talented (I rewatch Obvious Child at least once a year). It’s wild to me that the first Marcel YouTube video was put out 11 years ago (that was directed and co-written by her former husband, Dean Fleischer-Camp) and although it was really popular at the time (there’s a picture book, too), after all this time there’s a feature length film. By A24 no less!
And judging by the comments underneath the trailer I’m not the only one that’s feeling nostalgic and happy that this little shell is hitting the big screen. I’ve got my tissues ready!
Has Lorde Dropped a New Album?

ICYMI: Miley Cyrus dropped a live album, ATTENTION: MILEY LIVE, including some bangers from our problematic fav era… Bangerz.
