Is this the new 'Go Piss Girl'?

Hello, hello! It’s a real smorgasbord in this week’s letter: Euphoria memes, there is a Fenty baby on the way, the extremely catchy version of “7 Rings” by Kate Hudson, and the Winter Olympics.

Plus, as usual, we have rounded up some great reads to get you through the weekend from Quinta Brunson and Abbott Elementary to on-screen quarter-life crises to Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers.

Happy reading,

This Week's Fixations

Daysia: I love Alexa Demie and I love the “Bitch, you better be joking” Euphoria memes. I don’t think there’s been a more prolific TV meme since “Go piss girl.” Some of my favs include:

In other news that caught my interest this week, Jesy Nelson is shaking and crying at this tweet while Leigh Anne Pinnock is winning. And most importantly: Rihanna is pregnant! TBT to when we thought her relationship with A$AP Rocky was fake news. Congrats to the happy couple!

Hannah: My brain has been occupied by two things this week: Kate Hudson singing and the Winter Olympics, specifically Nathan Chen and Yuzuru Hanyu.

I’m a sucker for games or bits that involve singing on late night talk shows so was immediately charmed and super surprised by Kate Hudson’s doo-wop style cover of Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings.” Hudson performed the song as part of the “That’s My Jam” segment on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

(This Billboard article that recaps the moment mentions that Hudson sang in Nine, a movie musical from 2009, Music that Sia movie that was canceled last year, as well as Glee—I haven’t seen any of them so Kate Hudson’s vocal capabilities were a surprise to me. Sorry, Kate!)

I honestly didn’t even recognize the song at first, in the best way, and then when I realized it was “7 Rings” (I watched it on Hudson's Instagram which didn't have Fallon's intro) I was like, “I love this! Give me more of this!”

And the cover is even Ariana-approved!

Now for the second thing that has taken over my brain, in case you didn’t know the Winter Olympics have started. As much as I love the Summer Olympics, I’m a sucker for all things figure skating does matter what type—single, pair, ice dancing—I love it all.

It warmed my heart to see American favorite Nathan Chen have such a strong start and I’m wishing him the best for the Games! I’m also excited to see Yuzuru Hanyu, who has said he’s going to attempt a historic quad axel (!!) in Beijing, so I’m waiting with bated breath.

Longtime readers of the letter might remember how I wrote about my obsession with Yuri!!! on Ice in our first issue. For those not in the know, Yuzuru Hanyu is one of the skaters who inspired Yuri. And yeah, there’s going to be a rewatch happening this weekend.

Has Lorde Dropped a New Album?

Nothing new, but relevant to today’s fixations:

ICYMI: Pink Pantheress dropped the To hell with it remixes. Listen to this remix of “All my friends know.”

Too Many Tabs

Refinery29’s Venesa J. Coger wrote about Ruth E. Carter’s prolific, iconic career in costume design.

Writer Ashley Ray-Harris spoke to Quinta Brunson about her come up, Abbott Elementary, and making network television cool again for Vulture.

InStyle’s Laura Brown spoke to Gigi Hadid about the little joys in life and looking on the bright side of hard times.

For W Magazine, Caitlin Quinlan explores how three recent films—Licorice Pizza, The Souvenir Part I and Part II, and The Worst Person in the World—capture the quarter-life crises of the lead female characters.

Plus… Whoopi Goldberg and the American idea of race, how Mugler influenced anime, a bizarre epigraph, Benny Blanco recruited Justin Bieber to bully Charlie Puth, Aaron and Shailene’s politics?, recycling trends, an extremely wholesome “Actors on Actors,” Céline Sciamma’s feminist cinema, the cast of Bridgerton spills the tea on season two, and the rise of prosthetic TV penises.
