Will Lorde have her own Broadway show one day?

So sorry for the delays these past two weeks. This week, you'll get us twice: today and Friday (actually!). Thank you for your patience, y'all.

Starting off with some heavy stuff, Daysia’s reflecting on Thursday’s tragedy on the set of Rust. In lighter news, Hannah captures all the Twilight-related that popped up on her timeline again.

This Week's Fixations

Daysia: I cannot shake the devastating news from Thursday. Alec Baldwin accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza on the set of Rust. It’s a tragedy that begs many questions, but ultimately, this is not the first fatality caused by a “prop gun.” I spent a few hours trying to understand how an accident like this can happen in 2021, when I assumed we’d have safer methods for simulating gun violence in film. All I can really think about, after reading about how accidents like this have occured in the past, is how seemingly easy it is for them to occur? Dummy bullets can get stuck after unloading (which is what happened with Brandon Lee). It’s terrifying and avoidable

A lot of details have come out since then, from the inexperience of the armorer to the poor working conditions to previous gun discharges on set, that point to production negligence. My heart breaks for everyone involved. RIP Halyna Hutchins, a rising star gone too soon.

Hannah: There is no doubt that the Twilight series (both the books and the films) has its issues but there is no denying that it was a cultural moment that lasted several years. And despite the last movie (Breaking Dawn: Part 2, which I refuse to watch because I have to draw the line somewhere) coming out in 2012, the supernatural residents of Forks, Washington still have us in their clutches. Maybe it’s due to the fact that Midnight Sun (the entire novel) was published last year. Or maybe we all secretly want a 112-year-old immortal being to watch us while we’re sleeping (is that why people go wild over Joe Goldberg??). Whatever it is, this past week there were several Twilight-related moments that graced my timeline this week:

  • Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen) and Kellan Lutz (Emmett Cullen) reunited to recreate that iconic baseball scene for the parody series Emo’s Not Dead. I can just hear Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole” when I look at this photo. (Also, can we take a moment to appreciate Nikki Reed's comment.)

  • Speaking of bangers from the Twilight soundtrack, Paramore’s “Decode” celebrated its 13th anniversary. Also learned that this song was nominated for a (well-deserved) Grammy.

  • Finally, someone asked Kristen Stewart if she would be open to playing the Joker (you know because Robert Pattinson is playing Batman) and her response is simply iconic:

“Let’s do something new,” is a message I think Hollywood as a whole needs to take under advisement. While I don’t think we’ll be seeing Robert and Kristen together on screen in the near future, I do think it would be incredible to have them do an Actors on Actors.

Has Lorde Dropped a New Album?

First things first, Elton John said he wants to collab with Lorde. How amazing would that be?

Second, I (Daysia) watched David Byrne’s American Utopia last week. It was incredible and I enjoyed it very much. During the show, I thought back to last week’s Rolling Stone interview between Byrne and Lorde. Their similarities—infusion of theatrics, quirky dancing, introverted leanings, baring feet, connecting to the physical world—made me even more impressed by the perfect pairing of the two for this story. It also made me think that Lorde will, eventually, do something akin to what Byrne has done with American Utopia, meaning she could have her own Broadway (or West End, or whatever she wants) show that is a theatrical reimagining of her catalog with some greater story. While Lorde writes with a specificity (and Byrne writes in generalities, per their own words), I think she’d do something climate-oriented with sprinkings of coming-of-age. The setting would probably be quite lush and green.

With the news that Adele may be eyeing a Vegas residency rather than a tour, giving her a more stable routine and a sizable check, I think a lot of pop stars, fatigued of the on-the-road grind, are going to want that. Lorde, in particular. She’s already downsizing on the Solar Power tour and seems to prefer the more intimate settings. I don’t think Lorde is quite a Vegas girl though, so something on Broadway feels perfect, especially with its fairly small theatres.

ICYMI: Two new pop royals released some big projects. PinkPantheress dropped her first mixtape to hell with it and Remi Wolf put out her debut album Juno.

Too Many Tabs

Everyone’s favorite patriarch Brian Cox dished on the future of Succession and its endgame with British GQ’s Ben Allen.

Dune’s Sharon Duncan-Brewster spoke to Iana Murray on making screen history, getting into sci-fi, and capturing the essence of Dr. Liet Kynes for W.

Tinashe speaks about freeing herself from the pop machine, leaving RCA, and being a Black woman in music with writer Sarah Osei for Refinery29.

Plus… a history of the Wendy Williams Show, Glee is leaving Netflix, the ACE family lost ownership of their home, gender-neutral acting categories at the Gothams, Adele's interesting piece of memorabilia, an interview with Jack Harlow and already-iconic Succession season 3 memes.
